Uniform-ing

"There's a desire to cut out, hoard and reinvent what I recognize as sculptural, sexual and action-packed portions of imagery from everyday media. The photographs inside the still omnipresent newspapers and magazines have become my source material. Media is changing morphing rapidly via technological advancement to the point that it is being translated into pixels instead of printed on paper; this practice of capturing is also a rescue attempt of what I think is precious about these printed images.

There is a palpable greed to the activity – like being let into a department store and having an hour to hone in on what you think will be the most pleasurable and useful, and then pile them into the cart. There is a deep satisfaction I get from editing from the source and leaving the rest ‘on the cutting room floor’

The imagery I’m attracted to are parts of bodies, sport clothing, gowns, suits and shoes. I capture textural, sensual and culturally signifying forms from our ‘uniforms,’ taken out of context, that have a sculptural presence – then pit them together into contrasting amalgams that are unlikely, jarring and humorous. These new sculptures on paper end up being mentally projected as life-sized, since they are taken from the photographs of life-sized things."

A book of Hubby's collages from 2011-2012 will be published this coming year by THE ICEPLANT press, and distributed by ARTBOOK
